It was founded in 1840 and spent a brief period from 1841 to 1865 as New Zealand’s capital. By 1900 it had surpassed Dunedin to become New Zealand’s largest city.
Auckland functioned as a regional council working with seven city and district councils until 2009 when the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009 amalgamated the area as a “super city” under a single Auckland Council.
